The exhibition attempts to broaden ways of viewing nature, but also visual perception in art by highlighting the reciprocal relationship between place where perception of nature and art occurs on one hand and, on the other, opposite conceptual poles such as the ephemeral and the monumental, the worldly and the spiritual, the perishable, the imperishable, the trivial and the precious.
Nikos Alexiou’s fragile works of paper and reed are placed in a dialectic relationship with the Naxian marble sculpture works of Ingbert Brunk.
This opposing phenomenology of the materials reaches convergence through associative and handicraft patterns subverting stereotypes and certainties. Ingbert Brunk’s Naxian marble sculpture is no less ethereal and transparent than Nikos Alexiou’s work with paper, which surprisingly impresses with its solid, firm form. The ascetic, spiritual energy and clarity gives an ethereal breath to the marble, but also gravity to lightweight materials such as paper.
In an atmosphere of some sort of “artistic solidarity”, the works of the two significant artists co-exist in harmony and share space in a monument such as the Bazeos Tower which echoes the post-Renaissance crafts tradition. The process of the exhibition of the works in the tower resembles a ritual which leads to their in situ integration.
At the same time, an Ingbert Brunk’s marble sculpture of a tunic can be seen amongst the exhibits in Gyroulas Museum, in the archaeological site of Demetra’s temple. Also, Kostis Antoniadis photography works can be seen at the exterior byzantine ruins of Kaloritsa. Both monuments and artistic events are close to the home of the exhibition, Bazeos Tower.
A spiritual thread maps a territory, in which different works of art are diffused, “fall apart”, in time and place, but compose altogether a new artistic landscape, which, in turn, is but a miniature of the cultural palimpsest of Naxos.
